Omaha Day 2 Recap

Virginia vs. Tennessee

In Sunday's opening game, Virginia surprised Tennessee winning 6-0.  The Cavaliers got on the board early with a solo home run from Catcher Logan Michaels in the top of the 3rd inning.  The game remained close until the top of the 7th inning when Virginia put up 4 runs.  They had RBI singles from Michaels, Sophomore Center Fielder Chris Newell, Junior Third Baseman Zack Gelof and Sophomore Second Baseman Max Cotier.  The Cavs added 1 run more in the 9th to finish the scoring at 6-0

Virginia starting pitcher Senior LHP Andrew Abbott was outstanding, giving up 0 runs in 6 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts.  Sophomore RHP Matt Wyatt earned the save by tossing 3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only 1 hit over that span.  The two combined to shut out Tennessee for the first time in over 2 months.

Mississippi St vs. Texas

Mississippi State held on to beat Texas 2-1 in the final game of the opening weekend of the 2021 College World Series.  In a fantastic pitchers duel, Mississippi State's Sophomore RHP Will Bednar bested the Longhorns Sophomore RHP Ty Madden.  He struck out 15 Longhorns over 6 innings, giving up only 1 hit and 0 runs.  Madden was nearly as effective, striking out 10 and allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings pitched.

Mississippi State scored its 2 runs in the 4th inning on a sacrifice fly from Grad Senior Second Baseman Scotty Dubrule and a triple from Junior Left Fielder Brad Cumbest.  The Texas bats were silent until the bottom of the ninth.  Senior Center Fielder Mike Antico homered to start the inning but Mississippi State Sophomore RHP Landon Sims kept the Longhorns from scoring any more runs.  He pitched the final 3 innings, picking up 6 strike outs, to get the save.
