Texas vs. Virginia
After a nearly 3 hour rain delay Texas defeated Virginia 6-2 to advance in this years College World Series.
The Longhorns scored first, getting 1 run in the top of the 2nd inning on an RBI single from RF Doug Hodo. They added another run in the top of the 5th when LF Eric Kennedy scored on a wild pitch. Virginia came back in the bottom of the inning when CF Chris Newell launched a 2 run homer to right field to tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the 8th Texas DH Ivan Melendez singled home a run to make it 3-2 Texas. Virginia threatened in the bottom of the inning with 2 on and only 1 out, but Texas closer Aaron Nixon came in to get a double play ball and end the inning.
Texas extended its lead in the top of the 9th. Hodo led off with a walk. A bunt single by Kennedy and a HBP on Catcher Silas Ardoin loaded the bases with no outs. Virginia SS Nic Kent made an incredible play on a hard grounder hit to the left side by Texas CF Mike Antico that tipped off of the third baseman's glove. Kent fielded the ball and threw Hodo out at home. The next batter, 3B Cam Williams struck out but on a 3-2 count, 1B Zack Zubia laced a double to left center to clear the bases and make it 6-2 Texas. Nixon returned to pitch a scoreless bottom of the 9th and preserve the victory for Texas.
